How to do a brushless car wash
A brushless (touchless) wash uses foaming shampoo that loosens dirt without rubbing. Done in the right order, it reduces how much grit touches the paint and speeds up the wash.
Step by step
- Pick a shaded, cool spot
Avoid direct sun and hot panels; foam and water can dry on the surface and leave marks. In windy weather, watch that the foam does not dry out.
- Pre-rinse the vehicle
Work from top to bottom with pressurised water to remove loose dust, mud and sand. Spend extra time on wheels and the lower bumper area.
- Mix the foam at the label ratio
Fill the foam tube or foam gun with concentrate at the ratio on the product label (for example, about 1 litre per 60-litre tube for Autocher concentrated snow foams). For two-bucket or foam-gun use, follow the dilution on the product page.
- Apply the foam from the bottom up
Cover the vehicle with an even layer of foam. Starting low and working up helps prevent dirty runoff from streaking clean panels.
- Let it dwell for a few minutes
Leave the foam for the time given on the label so it can loosen the dirt, but never let it dry. If it starts to dry, rinse immediately.
- Rinse from the top down, then dry
Rinse the foam off with pressurised water from the roof downward. Dry with a clean microfibre towel to avoid water spots.
Things to watch
- Alkaline foams are stronger on road film; on waxed or ceramic-coated cars, pH-neutral formulas are a gentler choice.
- On very dirty vehicles a brushless wash may not be enough on its own; follow the foam with a light contact wash using a clean microfibre mitt.
- Using more concentrate than the label says does not clean better, it only makes rinsing harder.
- Do not let the product dry on the surface and do not apply it in direct sunlight.
This guide is general information; the directions on the product label always take priority for ratios and timings.
Frequently asked questions
Is a brushless wash safe for paint?
Because it loosens dirt without rubbing, it reduces how much grit touches the paint. Still, use a clean, soft microfibre towel when drying and never wipe a dry, dirty panel.
Do I need a foam gun for a brushless wash?
Most concentrated foams are used with a foam tube or foam gun connected to a pressure washer. Some products also work in a two-bucket wash; check the how-to-use section of the product page.
How much product should I use?
The ratio depends on the product and is printed on the label. Usage details for the products in this guide are also on their product pages.
