Private label labels, SDS and TDS documents

Before a private label product goes on sale, its label and product documents must be ready. This guide explains who handles label design, label text, SDS and TDS, and what to ask for.

Steps in the label and document process

  1. Label design usually sits with the brand

The brand owner normally prepares the label design, with the manufacturer's support on size, material and printing. Keep your logo and brand colours ready in vector format (for example PDF or SVG).

  2. Label text is prepared for the target market

What must appear on a label depends on the country where the product will be sold. Tell the manufacturer the target country up front; the label text is prepared accordingly and the required technical information is shared with you. Support for multilingual label content can be requested.

  3. Ask for the SDS (safety data sheet)

The SDS is the document that describes a product's contents, safe handling and storage. It is often requested in export and import procedures. At Autocher the SDS is shared on request.

  4. Ask for the TDS (technical data sheet)

The TDS describes the product's intended use, application method and main properties, and guides your sales team and customers. The TDS is also shared on request.

  5. Do a final check before printing the label

Check that the product name, contents, directions and warnings are consistent with the SDS and TDS, and review the draft with the manufacturer before approving it.

Things to keep in mind

  • Put your document needs in the first brief; the target country's requirements can affect the scope of the label and documents.
  • If you will sell the same product in several countries, review the label text separately for each market.
  • For exact legal obligations about labels and documents, check the regulations of the target market or ask a specialist.
  • If confidentiality of your brand matters, raise a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with the manufacturer at the start.

This guide is general information and not legal advice; exact requirements depend on the regulations of the target market.
